VISTA DE MESA
Location
Rio Arriba, NM
This high desert retreat responds directly to its surrounding landscape, with careful attention to massing, orientation, and its connection to the Abiquiú region, with a particular focus on Cerro Pedernal. The project explores how a discreet residential form can maximize views, natural light, and outdoor living while maintaining a strong relationship to topography, climate, and place.
Developed as a second home, the design emphasizes an efficient floor plan and intuitive circulation. An at-grade entry court anchors the home to the land, while the structure steps with the natural grade—allowing the main living level to hover above the landscape and extend outward toward expansive southwest views. This spatial strategy enhances openness, solar access, and long-range visual connections to the surrounding desert and mountain terrain.
Material selections and architectural expression are grounded in durability and regional character, emphasizing simplicity, warmth, and long-term performance in a high-desert environment. The result is a home that balances livability, environmental responsiveness, and architectural clarity within a cohesive and restrained framework.
